How We Test VPNs

Every VPN says it’s fast, secure, and great for streaming. We don’t take that on faith. Every provider on HidVPN is evaluated against the same criteria before it gets a rating, and we re-check that rating as providers update their apps, pricing, or server networks.

The 5 categories we score

Every review on this site breaks down into the same five categories, each scored out of 10 and combined into the overall rating you see at the top of the page:

  • Privacy & Security (30% of the score) — Encryption standard, protocol support, kill switch reliability, and whether the no-logs claim is backed by an independent audit or just marketing copy. We only credit a “no-logs” claim when a third party has actually verified it.
  • Speed & Performance (25% of the score) — How much speed you lose connecting to a nearby server versus a distant one, how stable the connection stays under load, and which protocol gets you the best result.
  • Streaming (20% of the score) — Whether the VPN actually gets into Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, and the other platforms people use it for, not just whether the provider claims it does.
  • Price & Value (15% of the score) — What you actually pay on the longest and shortest plans, whether the money-back guarantee is real and workable, and how the price holds up against what you get (device limits, extra features, server count).
  • Ease of Use (10% of the score) — How long setup takes, whether the app buries basic controls under extra features, and whether it’s something a first-time VPN user could figure out without a support ticket.

What goes into each score

Speed Drop (Local vs. Distant). We track how much speed a provider loses versus its baseline — both to a nearby server and to one on the other side of the world — using the provider’s own published benchmarks and independent test data where it’s available. A VPN that only performs well close to home isn’t much use if you’re trying to reach something overseas.

Stability. Does the connection hold, or does it drop mid-session? We rate this from sustained reliability data and user reports, not a single connection attempt.

No-Logs Verification. A provider claiming “we don’t log anything” means nothing on its own. We check whether that claim has been through an independent audit (firms like Cure53, Deloitte, or PwC show up regularly in this space) and note when it hasn’t.

Works in China. Rated Yes, Limited, or Unreliable based on how consistently a provider’s obfuscation tools get past China’s Great Firewall. This changes often and without notice from any provider, so treat it as a snapshot, not a guarantee.

Jurisdiction. Where a provider is legally based matters for how much pressure a government can put on it to hand over user data. We flag membership in the Five Eyes, Nine Eyes, or Fourteen Eyes intelligence-sharing alliances where it applies.

Torrenting & P2P. Whether P2P traffic is allowed network-wide or restricted to a handful of designated servers.

Keeping reviews current

VPNs change constantly — pricing shifts, apps get redesigned, streaming platforms tighten their blocks. This is our 2026 edition, and it gets revisited as providers change rather than left to go stale. If something in a review looks out of date, that’s useful to know — contact us and we’ll check it.

This is our hands-on test of NordVPN — no marketing slides, just the app, running live. One click, and we’re connected to a nearby server in Sydney. Secured. That’s the baseline — now let’s see what’s actually under the hood.

Open the full server list, and the depth shows up fast. Dozens of country options, plus the specialty categories most VPNs don’t bother building: Dedicated IP, Meshnet, Obfuscated servers for restrictive networks, Double VPN for a second layer of encryption, and Onion Over VPN, which routes your traffic through Tor on top of the VPN tunnel. This is the kind of server list that separates a real privacy tool from a bare-bones proxy.

Next, the setting that actually matters if the VPN connection drops: the Kill Switch. It lives under Connection and Security. Two versions — one blocks all internet traffic system-wide if the VPN disconnects, the other just quits the specific apps you choose. We’re leaving it off for this demo so you can see the toggle clearly, but on a real setup, this is the first thing we’d turn on.

Now the real test: what happens to your identity when the VPN isn’t perfect — or isn’t on at all. Disconnected, here’s our actual IP, ISP, and IPv6 address — the information a VPN exists to hide. We’ve blurred it for obvious reasons. Reconnecting now… and back on the Sydney server. Running the same leak check again: public IP now shows the VPN’s address, WebRTC exposes that same VPN IP — not our real one — and no leak.

Last thing people actually care about: does it slow you down? With the VPN off, here’s our raw connection speed… 310 Mbps, that’s our baseline. Reconnect to the VPN… secured again… and run the same test with NordVPN active. 390 Mbps — no meaningful drop. On this connection, NordVPN didn’t cost us any real-world speed.
