A VPN will always add some overhead to your connection, but a well-configured setup shouldn’t make streaming unwatchable. If it does, the cause is usually one of a handful of specific, fixable issues.
Why VPNs slow down your connection at all
Every byte of your traffic gets encrypted, routed to a VPN server (often in a different country than you), decrypted, and sent on to its destination, then the whole process happens in reverse for the response. That extra distance and processing adds latency and can cap your available bandwidth, especially if the server you’re connected to is far away or under heavy load.
The most common causes of a slow streaming connection
1. Server distance
Connecting to a server on another continent will always be slower than one in a nearby country. If you’re trying to unblock a US service from Europe, expect some speed loss, that’s physics, not a broken VPN.
2. Server load
Popular, free, or poorly-provisioned servers get overloaded during peak hours. If a specific server feels slow, switching to a different one in the same country often fixes it immediately.
3. Protocol choice
Older VPN protocols like OpenVPN in TCP mode are noticeably slower than modern alternatives like WireGuard or Lightway. If your VPN app lets you choose a protocol, switching to a faster one can make a real difference.
4. Your own ISP
Some internet providers throttle encrypted traffic they can’t inspect, which ironically means a VPN can sometimes speed things up by hiding your streaming activity from a throttling ISP, not just slow it down.
How to actually diagnose it
Run a speed test with the VPN off, then the same test with it on, connected to a nearby server. If the drop is dramatic (more than 50%), try a different protocol or server before assuming the VPN itself is the problem. When it’s not fixable
If you’re on a genuinely slow base internet connection to begin with, no VPN will make streaming smooth, since a VPN can only work with the bandwidth you already have. In that case, the fix is upstream of the VPN entirely.
