Why VPNs slow down your connection at all
Every byte you send gets encrypted, shipped off to a VPN server (often in a different country entirely), decrypted, then sent on to wherever it’s actually going, and the whole thing happens again in reverse for whatever comes back. It’s not unusual to see a 3-4x difference between servers on the exact same provider, simply because some are closer to full capacity than others right at that moment.
