What We Liked & What Could Be Better

✓ What We Liked

  • Exceptional Speeds
  • Rock-Solid Security
  • Proven No-Logs Policy
  • Wide Server Coverage
  • Price: Higher than many competitors.
  • Connection Limit: While recently increased (check current limit), it’s not unlimited like Surfshark.
  • Fewer Advanced Tweaks: Power users looking for highly granular configuration options might find it slightly less customizable than some others.
  • ExpressVPN Review 2026: Premium Speed & Reliability Worth the Price?

ExpressVPN sits near the top of pretty much every VPN ranking, and it’s earned that spot through exceptional speeds, dead-simple apps, and a genuine commitment to privacy. It’s not cheap. So the real question for 2026 is whether the performance justifies what you’re paying.

ExpressVPN pitches itself as the reliable, do-everything option: audited privacy claims, its own protocol and apps that need almost no setup. If simplicity matters more to you than saving a few dollars, it’s worth a serious look.

How this review was put together: we haven’t tested ExpressVPN on our own devices yet. Everything here comes from ExpressVPN’s documentation, its published independent audits and the sources we link to. When we test it, this review will show our own results with the date. How we test VPNs.

    What ExpressVPN does well

    • Its own protocol: Lightway is the default, and ExpressVPN designed it for fast, stable connections and quick reconnects.
    • Rock-Solid Security: Strong AES-256 encryption, TrustedServer technology (RAM-only servers), and a reliable kill switch (Network Lock).
    • Audited No-Logs Policy: ExpressVPN has published independent audits of its privacy policy and server setup (PwC and KPMG), plus security audits of its apps and Lightway (Cure53).
    • Wide Server Coverage: 3,000+ servers across 105 countries.
    • User-Friendly Apps: Clean, intuitive applications on all major platforms (Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, routers).
    • MediaStreamer (Smart DNS): A DNS option for devices that can’t run a VPN app, like some smart TVs and game consoles. It doesn’t encrypt your traffic.
    • Restrictive networks: ExpressVPN says its apps are built to keep working where VPNs are restricted. Access in places like China changes without notice.

Lightway and speed: what we know so far

ExpressVPN built its own protocol, Lightway, and makes it the default in its apps. ExpressVPN says it’s lighter than OpenVPN and reconnects faster when you switch networks, for example from Wi-Fi to mobile data.

We haven’t measured ExpressVPN’s speeds ourselves, so we’re not quoting speed figures here. Your result depends on your own connection and how far away the server is. The 30-day refund window is the cheapest way to check it on your network: run a speed test with the VPN off, then on a nearby server, back to back.

    Security & Privacy: TrustedServer Technology

    ExpressVPN’s security stack:

    • Encryption: Standard AES-256.
    • Protocols: Lightway (default), OpenVPN, IKEv2, and L2TP/IPsec.
    • Network Lock (Kill Switch): Stops data leaks if the VPN connection unexpectedly drops.
    • TrustedServer Technology: Servers run entirely in RAM, so everything gets wiped on every reboot — it’s physically impossible for them to store logs long-term.
    • Audited No-Logs Policy: Both the privacy policy and TrustedServer tech have been independently audited multiple times, which is about as much proof as you can ask for.
    • Based in the British Virgin Islands (BVI): A jurisdiction with no mandatory data retention laws.

The apps: built for people who don’t want to tinker

Simplicity is a big part of the appeal here. The apps are easy to install and use even if you’ve never touched a VPN before — a big “on” button dominates the screen, and picking a server is as easy as searching a list or tapping a recommended location. Settings are laid out clearly too, so protocol selection and Network Lock are never buried in some submenu.

MediaStreamer: a DNS option for TVs and consoles

MediaStreamer is ExpressVPN’s Smart DNS service for devices that can’t run a VPN app, such as Apple TV, PlayStation or Xbox. It changes the DNS servers the device uses (DNS is the lookup that turns a website name into an address). It doesn’t encrypt anything, so it gives those devices none of a VPN’s privacy protection. If you want the whole TV or console covered, the alternative is ExpressVPN’s router app.

    Pricing: The Premium Option

ExpressVPN now offers three tiers — Basic, Advanced, and Pro. On the two-year plan: Basic runs $2.99/month (10 devices), Advanced $4.49/month (12 devices, adds a password manager), and Pro $7.49/month (14 devices, adds identity protection). Monthly, no-commitment pricing starts at $12.99. All tiers include a 30-day money-back guarantee.

There’s no getting around it — ExpressVPN is one of the pricier VPNs out there, especially on shorter plans. You get the best value from the longer subscriptions, which usually throw in extra months free. Competitors like Surfshark undercut it with unlimited devices for less money, but ExpressVPN makes its case through consistent performance, reliability, and how little you have to think about it.

There’s a no-hassle 30-day money-back guarantee if you want to test it before deciding.

    Where ExpressVPN falls short

    • Price: Higher than most competitors.
    • Connection Limit: 10 simultaneous connections on Basic (12 on Advanced, 14 on Pro) — not unlimited like Surfshark.
    • Fewer Advanced Tweaks: Power users chasing granular configuration might find it a bit less customizable than some rivals.
    • A past split tunneling bug: from 2022 to early 2024, some DNS requests on Windows could go outside the tunnel when split tunneling was set to “only allow selected apps”. ExpressVPN said in February 2024 that it affected fewer than 1% of Windows users, disabled the feature until it was fixed, and had the fix audited. Details in our split tunneling guide.

Setting Up ExpressVPN: What to Expect

Onboarding is about as simple as it gets. Download the app for your platform — Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, or one of the supported routers — enter your activation code, and connect with a single tap. It defaults to the fastest available server, though you can browse the full list by country or search for somewhere specific if you need to appear in a particular location. For devices that can’t run a native VPN app, like some smart TVs or older game consoles, MediaStreamer configures DNS settings to work with content without full VPN encryption. This is a service built for people who want to connect and forget about it — power users looking for granular protocol tweaking may find fewer knobs to turn than with some competitors.

    Large downloads and P2P

ExpressVPN says P2P traffic is allowed on all of its servers, with no separate list to pick from. Network Lock, its kill switch, blocks your traffic if the VPN drops, so a large download doesn’t carry on over your normal connection. We haven’t tested download speeds on ExpressVPN ourselves.

    Who should pick ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN fits people who want a VPN they set up once and stop thinking about: simple apps, a protocol that reconnects quickly when you change networks, and privacy claims backed by published audits. It also suits travellers heading somewhere VPNs are restricted, as long as you set it up and check it before you leave.

Where it’s less of a fit: budget-conscious users. Even on the cheapest two-year Basic plan, ExpressVPN runs $2.99/month (versus $12.99/month billed monthly), so if price is the deciding factor, check our Best Budget VPN picks before committing. Power users who want deep manual protocol control may also prefer a provider with more advanced configuration options.

    How ExpressVPN Compares

Across the VPNs we’ve reviewed, ExpressVPN’s 9.3/10 overall rating places it near the top of the field, driven mainly by its speed and audited no-logs policy. NordVPN offers a similarly well-rounded package at a lower starting price, while Surfshark trades some of ExpressVPN’s server-network breadth for unlimited simultaneous device connections. If you need a VPN in a heavily restricted country, ExpressVPN is one of the providers that says it designs for those networks, though access can change without notice. You can see all of these side by side on our VPN comparison table.

    ExpressVPN FAQ

    Is ExpressVPN worth the price?
If speed and a hands-off setup matter more to you than saving a few dollars a month, it’s a reasonable choice: audited privacy claims, simple apps and its own protocol. We haven’t measured its speeds ourselves yet. If price is the main concern, compare it against the picks in our Best Budget VPN guide.

    Does ExpressVPN keep logs?
No. Its no-logs policy has been independently audited, which is one of its strongest selling points versus providers that only make unaudited claims.

Can I use ExpressVPN in China?
ExpressVPN says its apps are designed for restrictive networks, and it’s often reported to work there. We haven’t checked this ourselves, and access can change without notice, so install it and test it before you travel.

How many devices can I connect at once?
ExpressVPN’s connection limit depends on your plan: 10 devices on Basic, 12 on Advanced, or 14 on Pro. If you need unlimited simultaneous connections, Surfshark is worth a look instead.

    What protocol does ExpressVPN use?
Lightway, its own protocol, is the default. ExpressVPN describes it as its fastest option. OpenVPN and IKEv2 are also available if a network blocks Lightway.

Does ExpressVPN have a kill switch?
Yes — Network Lock, ExpressVPN’s kill switch, blocks all internet traffic if the VPN connection drops unexpectedly, so your real IP address and unencrypted traffic are never exposed, even for a moment. The app also includes split tunneling, letting you choose which apps route through the VPN and which use your regular connection.

    Should you pay ExpressVPN’s premium?

If you value ease of use and audited privacy claims more than the lowest price, ExpressVPN is a strong option on paper. The apps are polished and the audit record is one of the longest in the industry. We’ll add our own speed results once we’ve tested it.

    ExpressVPN makes most sense for:

    • Beginners who want a simple VPN that needs no setting up.
    • People who want privacy claims backed by published audits.
    • Travellers heading to places where VPNs are restricted (test it before you go).
    • Anyone happy to pay more for polished apps and 24/7 live chat support.

The price and the device limit are the main things to weigh. If saving money matters more, compare it with Surfshark or the picks in our Best Budget VPN guide.
